Jazz

NEW! Introduction to Jazz

Learn the fundamentals of improvisation, the history of our country's "Classical Music", study the Jazz greats and learn the theory and notation used for playing and understanding Jazz music. This introductory course is a prerequisite for joining the MCS Jazz Ensemble, a performance oriented group which competes at the Lionel Hampton Jazz Festival each year.

Jazz Ensemble

This performance-oriented small group is open to students playing any instrument or singing at a fairly competent level. The group plays Jazz standards in a combo setting from many styles of Jazz including Bebop, Cool, Swing, and Latin. Audition is required as well as the prerequisite "Introduction to Jazz" class, which can be taken in conjunction with this class. Goals for the group are rehearsing Jazz standards to a performance level with several local and regional performances throughout the year including the Lionel Hampton Jazz Festival.

Theatre

Teen Drama: Scene Work

Grades 7-12

In this course students will study elements of performance and production by experiencing what it takes to produce a play.  Projection, characterization and emotional connection will be taught.  Students will actively participate in behind the scenes theatre production skills such as set design, building and costume skills.  

Musical Theatre

Grades 7-12

Fall 2019
Designed to prepare students for musical theater productions in the community, this class offers a combination of skill development in voice, acting and movement. Musical scenes are selected and prepared for practice and interpretation. Students will work towards an end of semester group production or private recital. Interested students may also audition for featured solo parts. Audition required, recommended for Ages 12 - 18

Young Performers

A great entry level introduction to theater. This fun and energetic class will expose your student to a wide variety of theatrical basics, including stage presence, character development, and teamwork. 

Introduction to Playwriting

Grades 5-11
How do you create a story? This course will explore the components of plot, character types, and creatively effective dialogue. Using these story telling skills, students will adapt a well-known story into a unique play of their own creation. The course will culminate with each student presenting his or her plays to the class. Some may be chosen for production in the future.

Introduction to Shakespeare

Not offered Fall 2019 - Please check back for Spring semester
Students will learn monologues and scenes from Shakespeare's greatest plays while diving into sought after performance techniques. Recommended for the serious drama student with at least one year previous theater experience. Recommended for ages 12-18

 

Percussion

West African Drumming Ongoing

Fall 2019
Music Conservatory of Sandpoint is offering this weekly class, Tuesday at 5:45pm, taught by MCS percussion teacher Ali Thomas. An all levels, traditional style, West African drum class. Open to the public, ages 12 and up, no experience necessary. Newcomers and beginners start at 5:45pm. Suggested donation $5 to $15 per class.  Drop-in students welcome. A portion of every dollar goes to the MCS scholarship fund.

Set up for Strings!

Set up for Success! A parent & child introduction to the Violin. Parents learn the basics of violin so they are better equipped to help their child practice at home. Using the Suzuki method this class focuses on the teacher / parent / child working together to set the student up for maximum success. Class sizes are kept small so that each child can receive individual attention. Recommended for ages 5-10Call for more details and to sign up.

Violin Ensembles

These classes are meant to enhance a child's private lessons, as well as inspire them by allowing them to work on group pieces with other students at their level. Suzuki repertoire will be used as well as additional fun pieces. Learning how to play interactively with others is a rewarding and necessary skill to develop in any musician. These groups will perform at our student recitals.

For students who are still playing on open strings.
Recommended for ages 5-7.


Level One Ensemble

For students who are currently playing in Suzuki book two, Twinkle through Etude. 


Level Two Ensemble

For students who are currently playing in Suzuki book one, Minuet 1 through Gavotte and beyond.

This is a performance class! Students will work on style and warming up with various vocal techniques in preparation for the end of semester recital. You will partner with fellow musicians as we sing sacred music together. Previous experience necessary. Audition required. Recommended for young adult & adult vocal students
